Результаты January Auction Sales 358-359

26. январь 2022 | Vienna House Remarque, Osnabrück

Dear bidders and coin enthusiasts,

Wednesday evening at 10 pm our January auction sales ended with an impressive total hammer price of 10.4 million euros (estimate 7 million euros).

The auctions started with catalog #358 "German Coins - Highlights from the Annemarie and Gerd Köhlmoos Collection". The hammer price of this catalog improved by more than 40% compared to the estimate and ended up at over 2.8 million euros. Particular highlights of this collection were the Reichstaler 1660 from Essen (lot 87, estimate: 30.000 Euro, hammer price: 65.000 Euro) and the first Klappmützentaler from Saxony of Frederick III, the Wise (lot 182, estimate. 20.000 Euro, hammer price 75.000 Euro). We congratulate the Köhlmoos family and the new owners on their great taste and hope they will enjoy these numismatic treasures just like their old owners did.

After the lunch break, catalog #359 followed with an outstanding collection of Bavarian highlights. The approximately 60 Bavarian gold coins achieved a total hammer price of over 750,000 euros (estimate 300,000 euros). Many of the well-preserved rarities brought record prices. A tough bidding battle was waged over a particularly nicely preserved 5 ducat piece of Maximilian I on the fortification of the city of Munich in 1640 (estimate: 10.000 Euro, hammer price: 90.000 Euro).

This was followed by a fine selection of Löser multiple Talers from the Friedrich Popken collection, which were also hard fought over and achieved outstanding results (estimate: 310.000 Euro, hammer price: 560.000 Euro). Particularly noteworthy is a Löser in the weight of 4 Reichstaler 1666 on the death of August the Younger (lot 375, estimate: 25.000 Euro, hammer price: 80.000 Euro).

The highest hammer price of the day was achieved by a Brunswick Löser, but struck of gold: This is probably the only specimen in gold of its type. Christian, the bishop of Minden, had the undated piece minted in Winsen an der Luhe during the 30-year war period. This golden splendid piece achieved a hammer price of 400,000 euros (lot 450, estimate: 300,000 euros).

No less impressive were the results of two other gold pieces: 240,000 euros for an 18 ducat piece 1627 from Dresden (lot 550, estimate: 125,000 euros) and 165,000 euros for a 10 ducat piece 1657 from Breslau (lot 625, estimate: 150,000 euros) were also very noteworthy results.

At the end of the European pieces followed a series of very well preserved ducats and multiple ducats from Czechoslovakia, which more than tripled its estimate with an overall result of nearly 440,000 euros!

The auction day ended with a small selection of special orders medals and decorations. The highlight of this series was the rare chain and decoration of the Prussian High Order of the Black Eagle, which only changed hands after a tough bidding fight at a hammer price of 120.000 Euro (lot 804, estimate: 100.000 Euro).

We would like to thank all bidders and consignors, without your confidence in us yesterday's success would not have been possible!

The next floor auction sales will take place from March 21-25 with world coins including a special collection of impressive gold coins and from April 4-6 with coins from the ancient world both here in Osnabrück!

We look forward to welcoming you back again in March and April!

We are also preparing our upcoming summer auction sale and are accepting consignments for that special sale.

Best regards from Osnabrück
