Наши сессии eLive Premium Auction 407

26. март 2024 | www.eLive-Auction.de

Dear bidders and coin enthusiasts,

As part of our Spring Auction Sales 2024, we are pleased to present to you the Professor Heinz Tursky Collection of coins of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I (1848-1916) in our eLive Premium Auction 407.

Emperor Franz Josef came to the throne in 1848 with the March Revolution at the age of just 18. A few years later, he married his cousin, the beautiful Sisi, whose image still enchants tourists from all over the world today. The harsh defeats at Magenta and Solferino in 1859, the defeat in the war against the Prussians in 1866, the separatist tendencies of the parts of the country inhabited by Slavs: Franz Josef had to hold his multi-ethnic state together at a time when intellectuals were raving about the nation state. He failed in this. After the murder of Sarajevo, he slid into the catastrophe of the First World War with his eyes wide open. The 86-year-old Franz Josef dutifully carried out his duties until the very last day. It was not until the afternoon of November 21, 1916 that he lay down to die. His personal physician pronounced his death shortly after 9 pm. Franz Josef was thus spared from witnessing the dismemberment of his multi-ethnic empire in the Treaty of Saint-Germain.

The diversity of Franz Josef's territory is shown by his varied coinage with mints such as Karlsburg (today Romania), Kremnitz (today Slovakia), Milan (today Italy), Nagybanya (today Romania), Prague (today Czech Republic), Venice (today Italy) and of course Vienna.

We hope you enjoy studying the auction.

Best regards
Your Künker Team
