Splendid extremely fine coin Robert Aitken entwarf das Goldstück zu der 1915 in San Francisco veranstalteten Weltausstellung anläßlich der Fertigstellung des Panama Kanals sowie zur 400-Jahrfeier der Entdeckung des Pazifischen Ozeans durch den spanischen Seefahrer Balboa. Die Ausstellung wurde ein großer Erfolg und verhalf der durch das Erdbeben von 1905 und die Feuerkatastrophe von 1906 wiederholt gebeutelten Stadt zu neuem wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung und stärkte das Selbstbewußtsein der gesamten Bay Area. Der auf der Rückseite auf Latein geschriebene Wahlspruch steht für die amerikanische Idee und Stärke und läßt sich mit "Aus vielem wird Eins" oder "Vielfalt in Einigkeit" übersetzen.


This splendid fifty dollar gold piece was designed by Robert Aitken and was issued in both round and octagonal form. The Panama Pacific International Exposition was the 1915 worlds fair held in San Francisco, California. The exposition was a celebration of the completion of the Panama Canal, and also commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovering of the Pacific Ocean by the Spanish explorer Balboa. The exposition was a tremendous success, and did much to boost the morale and economy of the whole Bay Area after the disastrous earthquake and fire catastrophes in 1905 and 1906. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" was the motto proposed for the first Great Seal of the United States by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson in 1776. The latin phrase meaning "One from many", offered a strong statement of the American determination to form a single nation from a collection of states. Over the years "E PLURIBUS UNUM" has also served as a reminder of America`s bold attempt to seek unity while respecting diversity.
