Mit Ariarathes X. endete die ariobarzanidische Dynastie auf dem kappadokischen Thron. Er beerbte als Regent seinen Bruder, Ariobarzanes III., der zuvor von den Caesarmördern umgebracht worden war. Doch auch Ariarathes X. konnte sich nicht lange an der Macht halten und wurde nach wenigen Jahren von Marc Anton beseitigt. Interessant ist indes die Wahl seines Namens. Hiermit stellte er eine deutliche Verbindung mit der ersten Herrscherdynastie Kappadokiens her. Unklar ist jedoch, ob dies primär aus Gründen der Legitimierung oder aufgrund tatsächlicher geneaologischer Verbindungen geschah. The Ariobarzanid rule of Cappadocia came to an end with Ariarathes X. He succeeded his brother, Ariobarzanes III, who had been killed by Caesar’s assassins. However, Ariarathes X was also unable to remain in power for long, being removed by Mark Antony after just a few years. The choice of his name is, however, rather interesting. It clearly establishes a connection with the first ruling dynasty of Cappadocia. It is unclear whether this was primarily for reasons of legitimization or due to actual genealogical connections. Cf.
