Stratonikeia ist ein interessanter Fall für die Notwendigkeit, die bei der Münzprägung griechischer Poleis zugrunde lag. Obwohl die Stadt bereits im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. den wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand erreicht hatte, der für die Errichtung eines Theaters, eines Tripylons, eines Serapeions - kurz einer imposanten urbanen Landschaft - erforderlich war, prägte sie bis 167 v. Chr. keine eigenen Münzen. Meadows sieht dies im politischen Status der Stadt begründet. Stratonikeia war zunächst eine seleukidische Gründung, dann unter der Herrschaft von Rhodos, Philipp V. und wieder Rhodos und musste daher mögliche Befestigungsanlagen und etwaige Infrastrukturen nicht selbst finanzieren. Die Notwendigkeit einer eigenen Münzprägung bestand nicht. Erst als der römische Senat die Oberhoheit von Rhodos über Caria und Lydia beendete, erhielt auch Stratonikeia Autonomie und prägte fortan eigene Münzen. Stratonikeia is a fascinating case study of the needs that formed the basis of the coinage of Greek poleis. Although the city was prosperous enough in the 3rd century BC to construct a theatre, a tripylon, a serapeion – in short, an impressive urban landscape – it did not mint its own coins until 167 BC. Meadows is of the opinion that this reflected the city’s political status. First a Seleucid foundation, then under the rule of Rhodes, Philip V and Rhodes again, Stratonikeia did not have to finance any fortifications or infrastructure itself. There was no need for the town to mint its own coins. It was only when the Roman Senate ended Rhodes’ sovereignty over Caria and Lydia that Stratonikeia was granted autonomy and began minting its own issues.
