Description
SYANGELA. Õ-Obol, 400/370 v. Chr.; 1,08 g Dionysoskopf l.//In Incusum: Weintraube und Kantharos. SNG Keckman 264; Yarkin -; Wenninger -; Historia Numorum Online 750 (temporary number).
Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön
Exemplar der Auktion Hauck & Aufhäuser 16, München 2001, Nr. 150.
Das kleine Weinstädtchen (vgl. die Ikonografie der Münzen) war berühmt, weil in ihm ein Grab des Kar, des Stammvaters aller Karer, gezeigt wurde. Stephanos Byzantios, s.v. Souangela bemerkt dazu: Suángela: Eine Stadt in Karien, wo sich das Grab des Kar befindet, wie auch der Name deutlich macht, denn die Karer nennen das Grab Soúas, den König aber Gélas. Der Bürger heißt Souangeleús. Vgl. dazu Ch.P. Jones, Epigraphica, ZPE 139, 2002, 108–116, bes. 115.
The small wine town (cf. the iconography on the coins) was famous for containing the tomb of Kar, the progenitor of all Carians. Stephanos Byzantios, s.v. Souangela, comments on this. Suángela: A city in Caria where the tomb of Kar is located, as the name clearly indicates; the Carians call the tomb Soúas but the king Gélas. A citizen is referred to as Souangeleús.
