Philipp II., der Vater Alexanders des Großen, gelangte 359 v. Chr. an die Regierung. Bald nach seinem Regierungsantritt gelang es ihm, das gold- und silberreiche Pangaiongebiet unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen, dessen Jahresertrag 1000 Talente betrug und ihm die Ausprägung der schönen Goldstatere, in der Antike Philippeioi genannt, ermöglichte. Die Vorderseite unseres Stückes zeigt den Kopf Apollos, des delphischen Gottes, zu dem Philippos eine besondere Beziehung hatte. Im 3. Heiligen Krieg hatte Philipp sich gegen die Phoker gewandt, welche die Tempelschätze in Delphi geraubt hatten. Die Rückseite spielt auf einen Sieg Philipps 356 v. Chr. bei den Olympischen Spielen an (siehe Plutarch, Alex. 3,8.). Indem Philippos II. auf diesem Stück sowohl eine Verbindung zu Delphi als auch zu Olympia schuf, zwei Orten, die allen Griechen heilig waren, brachte er auch sein panhellenisches politisches Programm zum Ausdruck. Der Philippeios war eine der "Weltmünzen" der Antike.

Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, came to power in 359 BC. Soon after his accession to power, he succeeded in bringing under his control the gold- and silver-rich Pangaion region, whose annual yield amounted to 1,000 talents and enabled him to mint the beautiful gold staters known in ancient times as philippeioi. The obverse of our piece depicts the head of Apollo, the Delphic god with whom Philip had a special relationship. In the Third Sacred War, Philip turned against the Phocians, who had looted the temple treasure in Delphi. The reverse alludes to a victory won by Philip at the Olympic Games in 356 BC (see Plutarch, Alex. 3.8.). By referring to both Delphi and Olympia on this coin, two places that were sacred to all Greeks, Philip II also expressed his Panhellenic political stance. Philippeioi were among the “world coins” of ancient times.
