Description
AMISUS. Æs, 85/65 v. Chr.; 8,33 g Drapierte Büste einer Amazone im Wolfsfell r.//Nike geht r. mit Kranz und Palmzweig. SNG BM 1219 (dort irrtümliche Beschreibung?); Hoover 244 (dies Exemplar abgebildet).
Min. korrodiert, Felder des Revers min. geglättet, sehr schön

Appian berichtet, dass in den Kämpfen am Ende der Mithridatischen Kriege bei einer Schlacht am Araxes (heute Aras) auch Amazonen gekämpft haben (App. Mithr. 103). Selbst wenn diese Information korrekt sein sollte, ist es unwahrscheinlich, dass der Avers sich darauf bezieht.
According to Appian, Amazons also fought in a battle on the banks of the Araxes River (now the Aras) at the end of the Mithridatic Wars (App. Mithr. 103). However, even if this information is correct, it is unlikely that the obverse refers to this.
