Der Name der Siedlung Alopekonnesos bedeutet auf Altgriechisch "Fuchsinsel". So verwundert die Darstellung des kleinen Fuches auf dem Revers der Münze nicht. Den Namen verdankt die Stadt, folgt man Stephanos Byzantios, einem Orakel, das die ersten Siedler anwies, dort ihre Stadt zu errichten, wo sie der ersten Fuchswelpen angesichtig würden. The ancient Greek name of the settlement Alopeconnesus means “fox island”. Therefore, the depiction of a small fox on the reverse of the coin comes as no surprise. According to Stephanos Byzantios, the town was named after an oracle that instructed the first settlers to build their town where they saw the first fox cubs. Cf.
