Wie andere Poleis der Troas auch, zeichnet sich Assos durch die beinahe allgegenwärtige Wiedergabe eines Tieres auf seinen Münzen aus: des Greifen. Dieser wird im Falle von Assos, wenn er in Gänze abgebildet ist, immer kauernd bzw. springend dargestellt und kann dadurch gut vom sitzenden Greif auf den Münzen von Teos unterschieden werden. Die Datierung der Münze basiert auf ikonografischen Untersuchungen und führte Lorenzo Lazzarini (Assus Troadis: the beginning of coinage and its later silver emissions in the V and IV century B.C., West&East II, 2017, S. 31-41 bes. 34-35) zur Einteilung der Münzen von Assos in neun Emissionen. Dieses Stück gehört in seine dritte Serie, die sich vor allem dadurch auszeichnet, dass fast ausschließlich Obole und einige wenige Hemiobole geprägt wurden. Lazzarini assoziiert dies mit einer wirtschaftlichen Krise der Stadt, die kurz nachdem die Perser ihre Macht in der Troas verloren hatten, einsetzte.

Like other poleis of the Troad, Assos is characterized by the almost ubiquitous depiction of a specific animal on its coins: the griffin. When featured in its entirety, the griffin is always depicted crouching or leaping on coins from Assos, which makes it easily distinguishable from the seated griffin on the coins of Teos. The dating of the coin is based on iconographic studies and led Lorenzo Lazzarini (Assus Troadis: the beginning of coinage and its later silver emissions in the V and IV century B.C., West&East II, 2017, pp. 31-41 esp. 34-35) to group the coins of Assos into nine emissions. This piece belongs to his third series, which is characterized above all by the fact that almost exclusively obols and a few hemiobols were minted. Lazzarini attributes this to an economic crisis in the city, which began shortly after the Persians had lost their power in the Troad.
