Karlsburg geht auf das dakische Tharmis zurück und war unter dem Namen Apulum die Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Dakien, später als Weißenburg im 16./17. Jahrhundert die Residenz der Fürsten von Siebenbürgen. Im Jahr 1715 wurde die Stadt nach Karl VI., der die Festung anlegte, Karlsburg benannt.
