My story with Regina Adams and her husband John began, as it had with my father a few years earlier, at the New York Coin Fair in 2008.
Regina and John Adams visited our booth and were interested in our upcoming auction, which contained a suitable Löser for Regina‘s collection. It must have been the 2-thaler rider-piece from 1655 by August the Younger (lot number 1546 in this catalogue) that actually found its way into the collection. I still remember how fascinated I was by the friendly and elegant couple.
In the years that followed, I met the Adams couple again and again at American coin fairs. Over the years, a trusting and friendly relationship developed between us.
In 2012, John Adams entrusted me with his collection of European peace medals for auction, which we auctioned with great success in auction 232 in June 2013. As with Regina‘s collection, John‘s peace medals were of exceptional quality and each piece had been carefully selected.
I was very
surprised when Regina and John invited me to their home in May 2022. There,
Regina told me that she intended to part with her beloved collection and
consign it to an auction at our house. I got to see the entire collection that
day and was deeply impressed by the quality of each piece.
Regina told
me about her career as a photographer, which took her to Paris before she
emigrated to the USA. At the Adams‘ house, I witnessed Regina‘s photographic
talent.
This expertly eye for detail was not only important professionally, but
also enabled her to build a collection of exceptional quality. While other
Löser-collectors aimed to collect as many different pieces as possible, Regina
took the approach of acquiring the most beautiful examples.
Regina‘s husband John also highlights this aspect in his wife‘s numismatic biography below. We did not want to withhold this lovingly written text from you.
Regina has expressed the wish that her coins should be accompanied by numismatic-historical texts based on the latest scientific findings. Our scientific advisor Prof. Dr. Nollé has thankfully taken on this task. By fulfilling Regina Adams‘ wish, the historical potential of the Lösers becomes clear: they are coins that vividly show us the history of the early modern period and make it resonate, making historical experiences clear and perceptible.
I am proud and grateful that Regina has chosen our company to bring the beautiful pieces back into the collectors‘ circle and wish the collector and our bidders every success at the auction.

Regina Adams Numismatic Biography by John Adams
Regina was born on June 28th 1943, in Celle, a beautiful city in Germany with a rich history. Celle boasts a lovely castle (Schloss Celle) dating to the Renaissance, extensive gardens and over 400 half- timbered houses. Walking through Celle is like entering a time warp that takes the visitor back several centuries.
Having spent most of her early life in such surroundings, it is not surprising that Regina developed a keen interest in history. Touring “the bourse” of the New York International Coin Show in 1999, her attention was grabbed by a display of “multithalers”. Resembling an over-sized coin, these lovely talismans of the past had been issued in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by successive Dukes of Brunswick. The Dukes awarded them to leading citizens with the proviso that they be retained until the issuer saw fit to redeem them.
A thrifty
soul, Regina was shocked by the price of the pieces displayed and did not buy
one. She did tell her husband who, later, returned to the bourse
surreptitiously and did buy one. It subsequently became a birthday present and
Regina’s collection was launched. Thus, it
can be said with precision that Collection Regina was born on June 28th, 2000.
Since that very special day, Regina has added another 32 pieces, most of them
Brunswick multithalers and all of them in gem condition. To say that the
resulting collection is “dazzling” is not hyperbole. The pages of the catalogue
that follows will demonstrate the truth of that description.
The first multithaler was bought from Fritz Rudolf Kuenker of Osnabruck, as have most of the others in the collection. Once, on a trip to Europe, Regina and Her husband John visited Celle, where they dined with Fritz Rudolf Kuenker who, thoughtfully, had brought along a small cabinet filled with multithalers. John expressed his concern about the risk of displaying them in public but Fritz replied: “Do you see those two large gentleman sitting at the bar? They work for me. They are my bodyguards.”
Fritz and his son Ulrich deserve fulsome credit for helping to build this magnificent collection over a 20-year period!
Regina’s collection may not be the largest ever formed but it has a sure claim to being the best in quality. Each piece was carefully selected to meet the exacting standards of the owner. The result, now catalogued and offered at auction, speaks eloquently for itself.
