The 1839 Platinum Roubles from the Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich Collection

An exceptional journey – the 1839 Platin Roubles from the Hutten-Czapski und Georgy Mikhailovich collections

On January 31, 2019 the 3 Platinum Roubles of Tsar Nicholas I have been auctioned off during Berlin Auction Sale #316  (lot number 982-984).

The history of Russian platinum coins is simply fascinating! From 1828, under Tsar Nicholas I, platinum coins were minted in the values of 3, 6 and 12 roubles – a real revolution in the history of money! These rarities are not only numismatic treasures, but also bear witness to technical innovations that made it possible to work with the extremely heat-resistant platinum. The coins were made of high-quality Ural platinum and caused quite a stir in Europe.
The years 1839 and 1840 are particularly exciting and are considered the greatest rarities! Only a few specimens still exist today, making them incredibly valuable to collectors. The minting was technically demanding: the material used often had variations in mass and fineness. Despite their rarity, these coins did not prevail in circulation and were quickly returned to the state.
The coins' iconography is also noteworthy – they show the state coat of arms with the provinces of Russia and stand out for their simple elegance. The passionate collector Emmerich Hutten-Czapski contributed to the documentation of these pieces, while Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich Romanov built up an impressive collection.
After the end of the coinage in 1845, many coins disappeared through melting or remained hidden in private collections. The three platinum rubles offered here only resurfaced decades later and have an exciting history behind them – from Innsbruck to the Smithsonian Institute! Their genesis is an exciting chapter in numismatics that shows how closely monetary history is linked to technological developments.
