Die Datierung folgt Lorenzo Lazzarini, der insgesamt fünf frühe Emissionen für Gergis postuliert, wobei das vorliegende Stück der letzten Emission angehört. Lazzarini geht dabei von einer Unterbrechung der Münzprägung von 440 bis 395 v. Chr. aus, da die Stadt in dieser Zeit eine Krise zu bewältigen hatte. Er begründet dies unter anderem mit der Abwesenheit von Gergis in den Tributlisten der Delisch-Attischen Liga. Die Prägung dieser Obole habe dann an die erneute Konsolidierung der Stadt angeschlossen. Das Aversmotiv der Sibylle Herophile gehe dabei möglicherweise auf die von Stephanus Byzantius überlieferte Grabstelle der Prophetin im Heiligtum des Apollon Gergitas zurück. The dating follows that of Lorenzo Lazzarini, who proposes a total of five early emissions from Gergis, with the present piece belonging to the last emission. Lazzarini suggests that there was a hiatus in coinage between 440 and 395 BC, when the city had to overcome a crisis. He mentions the fact that Gergis did not feature on the tribute lists of the Delian-Attic League as one of the reasons for this. Lazzarini associates the minting of these obols with the city’s renewed consolidation. He argues that Sibyl Herophile as the obverse motif may refer to the prophet’s burial place in the sanctuary of Apollo Gergitas, as reported by Stephanus Byzantius. Cf.
