T. Clodius Eprius Marcellus was an capable politician who managed to hold on through the troubled times from Claudius to Vespasian, but finally ended by suicide, accused of a plot. Probably in AD 47/48 he was admitted to the Senate by Claudius and after his praetorship (48 AD) and a legionary command (probably in Britain) he became governor of the province of Lycia-(Pamphylia) AD 53-56. This coin, with which the Kibyrates honour a governor, dates from this period. Marcellus certainly did them a favour. After becoming governor over Cyprus, he achieved a suffect consulship in AD 62. Although a favourite of Nero, he achieved the coveted proconsulship of the province of Asia for 3 years under Vespasian and even reached a second consulship in AD 74. The circumstances of his suicide in AD 79 are not clear.
T. Clodius Eprius Marcellus war ein fähiger Politiker, der sich durch die wirren Zeiten von Claudius bis Vespasian halten konnte; schließlich aber doch eines Komplotts beschuldigt durch Selbstmord endete. Wahrscheinlich 47/48 n. Chr. wurde er von Claudius in den Senat aufgenommen und nach seiner Prätur (48 n. Chr.) und einem Legionskommando (wahrscheinlich in Britannien) von 53-56 n. Chr. Gouverneur der Provinz Lycia-(Pamphylia). Aus dieser Zeit stammt diese Münze, mit der die Kibyraten einen Gouverneur ehren, der ihnen sicherlich einen Gefallen getan hat. Nach dem Gouverneursposten über Zypern erreichte er 62 n. Chr. einen Suffektkonsulat. Obwohl er ein Günstling Neros war, erreichte er unter Vespasian den Prokonsulat der Provinz Asia für 3 Jahre und bekleidete 74 n. Chr. sogar einen zweiten Konsulat. Die Umstände seines Selbstmordes im Jahre 79 n. Chr. sind nicht geklärt.
